So I found out today that there is such a thing as the Ultimate Sports City Awards. And that got my mind ticking as to what stops I would put on my Ultimate Sports City around-the-world plane ticket. The official winner for 2016 was New York City pipping other worthy finalists such as Copenhagen, LA, Melbourne and Tokyo. Apparently NY got over the line on the back of its “strong city brand”, successful event portfolio topped off by a wildly successful US Open and for turning around its unsuccessful 2012 Olympics bid into an urban regeneration project.
But we Aussies didn’t miss out with Melbourne winning the “10 year anniversary award”. Woot woot. In a list that could rival the Logies, other gongs were handed out including “Best Newcomer”, “Best Home-Grown Event” and “Best Transportation”.
So back to that around-the-world ticket…an itinerary to the Top 5 in the overall rankings would take you (counting down from 5th place) to Glasgow , Auckland, Melbourne, London finishing off with a quick jump over the Atlantic to New York.
Get me to a flight centre…
