With only a few sleeps to go until Origin 1 the excitement is building in our house. I have great memories of screaming at the TV in the living room during Origin as a child. As a uni student, Origin in Brisbane always seemed to fall during exam time. But fresh to the big city one of my great mates and I always treated ourselves with a night off study and made the bus/train journey to Suncorp Stadium for the big game. I remember one year they were handing out Bobby Lindner face masks – our favourite player at the time – and we carried those masks around like they were gold bullions.
As an adult I’ve been a few more times both in Brisbane and Sydney and the excitement and atmosphere never dies. When I was playing grade netball on a Wednesday night so many people were upset about missing Origin they eventually scheduled a week off every year on Origin week – yes! Unfortunately for me not the year I ruptured my ACL. They rang my husband who was home watching the game at home. He told them he wouldn’t be able to pick me up until the half time break. Mmmm, priorities…
We will be watching Game 1 at home but heading to watch Game 2 live. Bring it on – I can’t wait. Queenslander!!!
