The weekend before Easter we ventured down to Purtell Park in West Brisbane to watch some of the first round of the Brisbane women’s rugby league comp.
The extra attraction to this game was Maido was refereeing as he does every week and it’s always good for a laugh to see him hobbling around on those gammy knees PLUS his QRL work colleague Jemma was running out for the mighty Normanby Hounds.
A contingent of fellow Qld Rugby League staff made their way down to cheer on Jemma and heckle the ref.
I loved watching the women out there loving playing the game and the camaraderie between both teams at the final whistle. For the record the Mount Gravatt Hawks got the W and also impressed with a rousing rendition of their team song. Well played ladies!
Womens’ rugby league has received some good press in the print media this week with indications from the top that a long term strategy is in place to build up the junior base and feeder paths for young girls with a view to establishing a womens’ NRL comp around 2020. I am sure the league bodies will be watching the other female sporting leagues such as WAFL, WBBL and Suncorp Super Netball carefully and keeping an eye on what works and what doesn’t.
Here are some pics from our afternoon. We’ll be back to watch more…
